UCI in the News
When the associate professor (Sabrina Strings) of sociology at the University of California, Irvine examined current assumptions around body fat, she found them to be overly simplistic and lacking in evidence. In her book, Fearing the Black Body, Strings shows how slavery and racism have shaped common views of body fat and its health consequences. Her work underscores why it’s imperative that poor health outcomes are traced to their structural and social roots and not blamed on individual choices.
Aaron Frank is one of the hundreds of medical students on campus. He is a first-year student. Frank says he appreciates the new safety measures and other efforts the university is making to keep learning as safe as possible. Safety signs are everywhere including inside the learning spaces, on the floors, and in outdoor spaces too, to remind students like Frank to do what they can to maintain social distance and use safe practices.
The visual and performing arts inspire and enlighten us. They provide solace, help us rise above difficulties and uplift our spirits during times of change and confusion. “Art is essential to the well-being of individuals and society,” explains Stephen Barker, Ph.D., dean of the UC Irvine Claire Trevor School of the Arts (CTSA). “We have an obligation to play a central role in bringing people together through these times.”
